DIM3 - Task 1 GreenPeace Motif Design

Definition of Motifs

MOTIF’S A motif is a repeated design, shape, or pattern. Also called a motive. It is generally a decorative, repetitive design, or a single example of the pattern. It is an important and sometimes recurring theme or idea. A prominent sequence of motifs can form the basis for a pattern or design. Backgrounds are an important property of websites. They are used for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Aesthetically they add beauty to the design and also add to the style and tone. Functionally they add negative space and balance and also place the focus on the website. Backgrounds use flat colour, gradients and or patterns to enhance the site. Some are plain and others very ornate. Some are smaller abstract graphical and optical patterns and others are larger single realistic or representational motifs. Backgrounds can be a one image or they can be a series of repeated tiles. The backgrounds are a useful element in visual design and should compliment the website not dominate it.

BRIEF 1

You have been asked to design a new motif and background pattern for a website for Greenpeace. Greenpeace want to enhance their web presence across the globe to give them a fresh look without total redevelopment. This will give them more longevity halfway through their brand presence before they finally have to rebrand and redevelop. The style must be illustrative rather than photographic. Note Greenpeace’s typographic logo looks naive and hand drawn and they want that treatment to carry through which has been outlined in their comprehensive style guide. They also want a Electronic Proof of Concept (EPOC) for existing website to see how the Motif will look with Work in design groups of 3. Technical constraints include: Working with the style guide, visual identity, file size for efficient download times, and screen ratio of website, browsers and screens.

DEFORESTATION
= forest destruction , affects climate change
Tropical forest destruction is responsible for about 1/5 of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than the world's entire transport sector
Greenpeace is campaigning for 0% deforestation by 2015
1/4 of forests lost in the last 10,000 years were destroyed in the last 30 years
illegal logging exists - Australia imports 400$ million worth of illegal timber each year
Since 1950, deforestation = 120 billion tonnes of CO2 into atomsphere

ideas: trees, the good and bad side, wildlife, blue skies, clouds, dark grey rainy clouds, little black figures - holding a flag (greenpeace) as if they are conquering the impossible (as one, we can make a difference), a large tree as the background - swirly leaves, branches.

PEACE - peace sign, rainbows, clouds
